Find Focus in a Distracted World: A Review of "Deep Work" By Cal Newport
"Deep Work" is a thought-provoking and empowering guide to achieve greater focus and success in both your personal and professional life. Here is my review of this amazing book.
🚀 The Book in 3 Sentences
- A book, that opens new levels for your brain in any cognitively intense activity.
- Numerous evidence of how beneficial Deep Work is for one's life.
- The author provides strategies for overcoming the distractions of modern life and achieving a state of flow.
🎨 Impressions
It was a quick one for me, because "Deep work" hooked me right from the start and all points mentioned were 100% applicable to my daily workflow.
The book is easily digestible and written in great a format. Practical tips are combined with the stories of many successful people like Bill Gates, J.K Rowling and Carl Jung leveraging Deep work. I admire how the author describes a term itself and looks at it from different angles.
Deep work
is a term coined by Cal Newport to describe a state of focus and productivity achieved by minimizing distractions and maximizing cognitive resources.
I think that the main goal in productivity content is always to offer a way, how we can simplify our workflow and achieve new results, this book perfectly covers both of these tasks and is interesting to read firsthand. I found these great visuals on the net, take a look:
How I Discovered It
Nearly all of the Youtubers I watch were sharing reviews of this book on their social media and it was on my list for a long period of time. But also, I remembered, that I have seen Cal`s appearance on TED on the topic of quitting social media (Cal does not have any of those, it is also fascinating), definitely worth taking a look at, here is the link:
Even though I have seen summaries and key concept videos about the book, I enjoyed reading it for a deep dive into the topic.
Who Should Read It?
I would recommend "Deep work" by Cal Newport to each and every person who has to do some cognitively intense tasks during studies and work. I think it can be the most beneficial for coders, writers, and anyone, who has to give a concrete output for the work, i.e. - produce. As Cal suggests, we are now living in such a digital age, when deep work is rare and by adding those principles, people can reach new levels in their study/work game for sure.
✍️ My Top 3 Quotes
"Who you are, what you think, feel, and do, what you love—is the sum of what you focus on"
"To produce at your peak level you need to work for extended periods with full concentration on a single task free from distraction. Put another way, the type of work that optimizes your performance is deep work."
"Giving people more control over what they do and how they do it increases their happiness, engagement, and sense of fulfillment."
